CI Grom Cole McCaffray in Texas
Despite all of the hype over the last year surrounding BSR Surf Resort in Waco, Texas, it’s still hard to get used to the idea of surfers flying away from the coasts to the middle of Texas to ride what’s becoming one of the most sought after waves in the world.
14-year-old Channel Islands team rider Cole McCaffray had the opportunity to roll to Waco with a grom squad where he bumped into legendary surf photographer Jimmy Metyko. Originally from Houston, Jimmy spent his early years in Santa Barbara documenting the evolution of Tom Curren and friends on the California coast, working hand in hand with CI. He then moved back to the Austin area to raise his family. Somehow the surf followed him and once again he’s documenting the evolution of surfing, this time from Texas.
“I had not seen Cole surf before,” explains Jimmy. “I was really surprised by two aspects of his surfing: First, his edge control. He knew how to use the rail of that Fever model. Even when zero fins were engaged, he was able to hold a turn with the rail alone. The board just seemed to be an extension of his mind. Second, as seen in the sequences, Cole held style through his entire maneuvers even when doing some insane fin throws. Maturity in style at a young age is always a hallmark of great things to come.”
