Timmy Curran Board Demo: Riding a Neckbeard
Board: 5’6, 19 1/4, 2 1/4
Neck Beard= Interesting sessions…
My first session on the Neck Beard was a bit of a shocker. I think sometimes you can have shockers just because, and that it was! Don’t think too much while surfing…
On a side note, after that spectacular session I accidentally pushed my spair hide a key into a black hole in the frame of my car. It took 30 min and a miracle to get it out, thanks to an old neighbor who came to the rescue with a hail Mary, hay maker. Thanks Ernie!
My second session, I got tricked by the Great Northern Pacific to paddle out at a 6.0 high tide. It was one of those days were you look at it and wonder why there ain’t no one out. Hmmm… So I ran to my car and suited up as fast as I could. Once I got back down to the waters edge I saw that it was breaking 6 feet from shore and to my surprise there was a lot of back wash? Weird… I was gung-ho though, you know, and paddled out. The waves were horrible, and a sweet southern gale came a blowing to top off my 20 min session. You’d think that after being a surf addict for 20 years I’d be a better judge of conditions. Maybe it’s the addict part that’s the problem… Especially when filming, it’ll get me every time.
The next session the waves were really fun, especially for that board. It was waist to chest high and fun little peaks. One thing I liked about this board was that it paddled really good for it’s height. That is always a plus for me, a board that’s weird to paddle is doomed from the get go.
It was fast and a bit loose off the tail for sure. The board felt like it would be amazing if I was regular foot and got to surf C-street front side. I bet it would be a blast, and wonder if that’s what Dane was thinking when he designed it. I am baffled at how well Dane shreds this board, in all conditions and sizes. That dude has a lot of power and is able to tame it like a fine racing horse. I guess that is what makes Dane the best free surfer in the world. He is one of those non chalant dudes who can air 360 a door. Good for him…
After that session I decided to put my old faithful 3’2 Vector fins in to see if they would give it a little more hold. Well sure enough, they did. They waves were head high+ and the board was feeling fast and free. After 3 sessions I was due for a fun surf on this board, and was thinking this is it. This is going to be a 3 hour session of total stoke. I caught about 10 waves and was frothing, due to timing it right and getting a window of really fun waves and hardly anyone out. Well, it all ended… ended for about a month or so. I went for a backside air 360 on a waist high little right and hyper extended my knee and sprained my ankle. It’s been almost 3 years since I have had a injury and the timing is no bueno. It is almost Santa Anna wind time and you know what that means… could of been worse though, and I don’t need surgery so it’s all good. Wish I could of had a few more sessions on the Neckbeard, but was glad to get a few waves where the board felt really good under my feet. I would recommend this board for mushy, fun, ripable surf, but gets a little loosy goosy which can always put you in interesting places on the wave. Gonna go sticker up my next board The Rubble and stare at it for about a month while I am hitting the gym like Kimbo Slice.

Nice Video. How tall is Timmy actually?
Another thing, I’m very interested in de Dumpster Diver or the Neck Beard, but most of the Videos are filled with aerial stuff, but me and most of the other guys out there do cutbacks, snaps and stuff. For me it would be nice to see how vertical you can go with a board like this…Doing Carves, Snaps, Frontside and Backside…this is the reality. just my 2.5 cents
5’9″ approx.
We will tell the team to tone it down a little.
Hi guys
Great video clip! I’m about 5’10, 68kgs and ride the Neckbeard as a 5’4. It’s an amazing board and is very loose! Stoked
Timmy should be on the tour; hes better than half the guys on it.
Actually, Timmy shouldn’t be on tour because he’s better than half the guys on it.
I love these Timmy board demos – keep them coming! Yea… I agree, Timmy is better than most surfer’s on the tour : )
how much does he weigh?
my fault, just found it 155
Hi Guys,
If I am 6’2 and 195 pounds (Still very athletic and not fat) what size of Neckbeard or DD should I ride? I would appreciate your feedback! Thanks!
Ricky,
Expert level ride a 5’8″ DD or 5’7″ Beard.
Intemed ride a 5’10″ DD or 5’10″ Beard
Thanks for your feedback guys! I will be getting one of them very soon!
I’m surprised he’s using the FAM2s — aren’t those designed for heavier surfers?
They are designed for guys over 160, being 4.75 in depth, but some like the extra drive.
hi im 6FT 1 and 183 pds, intermediate surfer, what neckbeard dimensions would you recommend
Greg, those pack a good amount of volume in a small package, check out a 5’8″ 19 3/4 x 2 3/8
5′ 11″ 145 lbs, novice. Lookin at the neckbeard but not sure on the size and the right volume, surf mainly in florida riding mushy faces and dumpy shore break. If you could help me out with the dimensions that would be sick.
Anthony,
a 5’7 x 19 ½ x 2 5/16 (28L) is rated for a 190lb expert, so although it is short, it should have plenty of volume for your weight.
hi what difference does tail shape in neckbeard make sharp square edge vs the rounded square
the chop tail allows you to carve sharper more pivotal turns with greater responsiveness.
Im 13 years old 103 lbs and 5’7 in height
I live in Australia where I live I surf a lot fat point breaks but It does get really good. Do you recommend a 5’4 neck beard thnx
Sean, that board has enough volume for a 160lb expert or a 150lb intermediate. you could go custom 5’2″
Or just go 5’4″ and catch a ton of waves!
hi what difference does tail shape in the neckbeard make sharp wide square edge vs the new rounded square
how much more does it cost to custom order
Sean depends on the shop usually $20 but some shops are less and some more.
Thanks a lot guys
!
Whats the weight limit on a 5’2, sorry i forgot to ask thnx
5’2″ beard is rated for a 150 lb expert
hi what difference does tail shape in the neckbeard make sharp wide square edge vs the new rounded square
Surfs like it looks, just a bit smoother
Hi
I was wondering how wide the tail is ??
thanks
Connor – 15 1/8″ at 12″ and 8 5/16″ block on the 5’4″ Beckbeard.
Hi! I am new to surfing, but am an experienced wakeboarder/wakeskater, so I am somewhat used to riding a shorter board style board if that helps? I am 6.0′ and weigh 160 pounds. What would be a good size NeckBeard for my size, beginner-intermediate level surfer, and wait high surf conditions? I would really, really appreciate your feedback. Thank you!
Connor,
By our calculations a Neckbeard at 5’8 x 19 ¾ x 2 3/8 and 29.6L (200 lb expert) should float you.
Hi I am 77 kg and 6’2 I am an intermediate surfer and I want to know what size neck beard I should get. I also want to know if this board will cope very hollow and fast waves as well as waves overhead? And one last thing, does the quad fin offer the same maneuverability? Thanks
I forgot to mention that i will probably grow another 1 or 2 inches
Simon,
Your height and weight (170lbs) means 5’7 x 19 ½ x 2 5/16 (28.0L 190lb expert) or 5’8 x 19 ¾ x 2 3/8 (29.6L 200lb expert).
If you are surfing very hollow fast and overhead waves this is NOT the board. This board is best up to head hi, and will work in steep waves but again not the best choice for barrels. Look at a Semi Pro or Proton for OH and Hollow.
Quad will be faster and some say not quite as manueverable
Hi Ive been riding a 5’6 X 19 3/8 x 2 3/8 eps and loving it. im 175 and a very advanced surfer what dims should i order my neck beard i like eps for my small wave boards
Sam,
Yeah order the same dims and contruction a your DDiver, the added nose and tail width will let the Beard grovel a littler better than your DDiver.
It also has a little less tail flip so it will take to flat sections better. Your DDiver will work a little better in the pocket.
a 5’6 ddiver
What size board do you recommend for my 13 year old daughter? She’s a beginner, about 5′ 100lbs. Id like to get her something used, kinda cheap, also we’ll be surfing in Florida- east coast and (west coast) when we can!!! Not too sure as I started out on shortboard around her age.
EJ, best bet is something like a soft top or used longboard.
If you want a CI, look at a WaterHog 7’2″ in tuflite construction. It’s a blast to ride and will last for years so you can ride it after she moves on to shorter boards
Hey CIS,
what size do you recommend for a cold water surfer (6´2, 180lbs, 6mm wetty most time of the year)? I surf in conditions which are often mushy and lack some power (North Sea) and I´m used to surfing a Pod 6´0. Do I have to think about the same size like the Pod?
Thanks.
Charly,
That 6’0″ Pod has 34.1L of volume, the same volume NeckBeard would be a 5’11″.
Check our handy volume tool for the boards that may fit your size and conditions.

Hi, I am around 5″7, 63kg, advanced (most days), currently surf a 5″10 shortboard and a 5″6 diamond tail. I am thinking about getting a 5″4 neckbeard or maybe I should go a bit shorter? Does the neckbeards wide tail have the same sort of feel but more release than a wide diamond tail.
Thanks
You can see a good range of boards that should work for you here on this page http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php
A diamond tail should have very good release as Kelly rode those in the early 2000s. It allows you to ride a longer board with a shorter feel due to the shorter rail line. Design moved past the daimond tail several years ago and now you can ride shorter boards like the neckbeard without the diamond tail.
hey there, I’m 6’4 210 athletic and i realize the NB’s have a decent amount of volume but one thing i have an issue on OTHER than float is my sasquatch stance. I’ve been riding a 6’2 motorboat and it is fun don’t get me wrong, however i feel like i need a extra couple inches infront of my front foot. Do you think a 6’4 neckbeard for me would even ride the way its meant to? thx
ps. majority of the waves i surf here in South Florida are small fast punchy beach break.
Rob,
The board design of the NB scales up well. If you feel a 6’2″ MB is too short, then try the longer NB. While our sizing recommendations are meant to guide people to a size board that will work best for them, the reality is that it comes down to individual preference on feel and how much fun you are having.
anyone notice the dolphin in the background at 3:04?
hey guys, im an intermediate surfer- 70kg (150lbs) and just under 6ft.
what dimension dd or nb do you recommend for small onshore beachie days in australia
Ed,
Look at a Diver or NB at 56 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/4
Hi, I am in Florida and looking for your best small wave board. I rate myself as pretty good surfer, been doing it since I was 14. Now I am 36 and 5’8 165 lbs, I feel that the boards I am used to ridding are not giving me the float and feel to be sluggish in the smaller surf. My current board is a 6’0 quad, less that 19 inches wide. I was looking at the NB,,,but would the biscuit be more of what I am looking for? I feel I need more volume under me,,,what do you suggest?
